Why do so many veg burgers try so hard to replicate meat? If I wanted ground beef or bison or turkey or whathaveyou, I’d order it. This black bean burger is what it claims to be.

Ingredients

  • 1 can (16 oz.) black beans, drained and rinsed

  • 1 medium yellow onion, diced

  • 3 large garlic cloves

  • 1 large egg

  • 1 Tbsp (15 mL) ground cumin

  • 1 Tbsp (15 mL) chili powder

  • 1 tsp (5 mL) hot sauce (BBQ, piri-piri, or your fave)

  • 1/2 cup (125 mL) bread crumbs

  • Four ciabatta buns and butter

Directions

  • Preheat your outdoor grill to high heat (about 450 degrees F).
  • Add the beans, onion and garlic in food processor and process until smooth (there’ll be some chunks; no problem!)
  • Stir together egg, chili, cumin and hot sauce in a large bowl. Mix in the bread crumbs. Add beans to the mixture and stir until the mixture is thick and holds together.
  • Divide the mixture into four patties and grill for about eight minutes. Flip.
  • Butter four ciabatta buns and grill for about eight minutes.
  • Dress buns with favourite toppings: lettuce, tomato, mayo, additional hot sauce, etc.
